The Brazilian Air Force inaugurated a new autonomous secondary radar at Petrolina Airport in Pernambuco on July 28, strengthening airspace surveillance in the Northeast. The RSM970S NG radar, part of a contract between the Airspace Control Department (DECEA) and a consortium of Omnisys and Clemar, allows for more precise monitoring of aircraft by communicating via transponders. With 69 similar pieces of equipment already in operation in Brazil, another radar is due to be installed in Bom Jesus da Lapa, Bahia, in 2024. Brigadier Alcides Teixeira Barbacovi stressed that the installation reinforces DECEA's commitment to national sovereignty and the improvement of the Brazilian Airspace Control System. The new equipment is considered a Strategic Defense Product and was manufactured in São Bernardo do Campo, SP.
