Discover the world's first 100% solar-powered radar station

Chile has taken a significant step towards sustainability in civil aviation by inaugurating the world's first radar station powered entirely by solar energy. Located on Cerro Barros Arana in Calama, in the Atacama Desert, this innovative installation, developed by the French company Thales for the General Directorate of Civil Aeronautics (DGAC), uses 340 solar panels. Combining an advanced STAR NG primary radar and an RSM secondary radar, the station ensures efficient air traffic surveillance in northern Chile, monitoring commercial flights with greater safety and reliability.
